Overview
In the UK, consumers have the benefit of an automatic cancellation right or a 'cooling off period' when buying goods or services from retailers or service providers without face-to-face contact, known as 'distance selling'. The cancellation right is only applicable for a certain time, known as the 'cancellation period'. This cancellation right covers all instances of distance selling, including sales made:
- On the internet
- Via the television
- By mail order, including catalogue shopping
- Over the phone or by fax
The cancellation right does not apply between businesses.
The right to cancel distance selling agreements is set out in the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.
See The right to cancel for more information.
